  1. The competition is open to any South African woman employed as an independent winemaker. Assistant winemakers are not eligible to enter.
  2. In order to enter, you have to have produced at least one vintage independently, although consultation from another source is allowed.
  3. Customized award labels are printed for the winner and carry her name and that of the estate/cellar, as well as the year in which the award is made. The winner of the title is thus eligible to apply these winning labels to all and any bottles of wine of which she was the independent producer - irrespective of current or future vintage or cellar. This also means that labels can be ordered in the future for future vintages produced by her.
  4. Labels have been made available since 2008 to the year's six finalists who are chosen by the judges based on the first round of blind tastings. These labels will also be printed for competition's finalists in 2009.
  5. As her main prize the winner will have the opportunity to travel to France during the 12 months following her award to visit a number of wine cellars, meet with French wine makers and attend organized tastings in Bordeaux. The air ticket, accommodation, meals and transport while in France will be paid by the organisers. The details of the trip will be finalised personally with the winner.
  6. During the 12 months following the award, the Woman Winemaker of the Year has to be available to conduct at least one wine tasting of her own wines in the Cape Town area. In addition, the employing cellar of the winner at the time of her award will be required to host and sponsor one lunch- or breakfast function organised by the organisers and main sponsor, Landbouweekblad, in the Cape Town/Stellenbosch area.

    Important:
All written communication issued by the winner's marketing or PR department/company to the press or otherwise during said 12 months should in all cases state the full and correct name of the award, namely the Landbouweekblad Woman Winemaker of the Year Award.

  12. You may enter as many wines as you wish. The winner is being judged on the entrant's abilities as wine maker, and is given the benefit of the doubt through the opportunity to enter what she considers her best release/s of 2008/9. The judges will assume that this wine is representative of her capabilities as a wine maker. Please note that wines entered by different candidates are not judged against each other, but each in its respective class. The excellence and qualities of an innovative and well-balanced wine will give the maker a sufficiently high score to ensure a place in the finalist line-up.
